Use of Name and Trademarks

The Weill Cornell Medicine name and emblems are trademarks owned by Cornell University. Weill Cornell Medicine is internationally recognized for excellence in medical education, research and patient care. Its name and marks are among the organization’s most valuable assets and, as such, they are not to be altered or misused in any way. Since faculty, students and staff share in the benefits associated with the brand, they also share responsibility for protecting the name and ensuring its proper use.

Per Cornell University policy 4.10 faculty, employees and students may accurately mention their affiliation with Weill Cornell Medicine on personal social media accounts, business communications, or in other personal endeavors. However, using Weill Cornell Medicine brand elements in connection with one’s personal or non-WCM business activities in ways that might be interpreted as representing the institution is prohibited. For example, to avoid confusion faculty, staff and students are asked not to wear Weill Cornell Medicine-branded attire or WCM-issued uniforms, including lab coats, to external demonstrations and rallies.

While our institution is committed to fostering an environment that supports and encourages open dialogue and freedom of expression by individual faculty, students, all individuals must respect and acknowledge Weill Cornell Medicine’s brand identity, integrity, and reputation, and avoid incurring potential legal risks or reputational harm to the enterprise.

Requests to use the Weill Cornell Medicine name, seals, logos and other symbols in marketing materials, advertisements, press releases, videos, films or websites should be directed to the Marketing division within External Affairs. The Marketing group will review requests on a case-by-case basis.  Depending on the nature of the request and intended use, the review process may involve consultation with other members of the administration, such as legal counsel or compliance, and may require several weeks to reach a conclusion.
